Craft & Design Ecosystems
Craft & Design Ecosystems is a programme of the Eurasian Council for Craft and Design aimed at developing craft and design as interconnected professional ecosystems at local and regional levels.
The programme approaches craft and design not as separate fields of activity, but as components of a unified system encompassing professional communities, educational and cultural institutions, as well as cities and regions. Sustainable development is achieved not through isolated initiatives, but through structured partnerships and professional exchange.
Programme Objectives:
the formation of sustainable local and regional craft and design ecosystems;
the development of professional connections between craftspeople, designers, and institutions;
the strengthening of the role of craft and design in territorial and socio-economic development;
a transition from an event-driven approach to systematic, long-term engagement.
Key Areas:
Ecosystem Mapping:
Analysis and mapping of local ecosystems, including craft practices, design studios, educational and cultural institutions, production chains, and markets.
Partnership Development:
Establishment of sustainable partnerships across craft, design, education, culture, and territorial stakeholders.
Professional Exchange & Co-Creation:
Joint craft × design laboratories, interregional exchanges, pilot co-projects, and collaborative practices of knowledge and product co-creation.
Capacity Building for Territories:
Methodological and expert support for cities and regions in developing craft and design ecosystems, including the training of local coordinators and curators.
Knowledge & Best Practices Exchange:
Exchange of experience between regions of Eurasia, adaptation of international models to local contexts, and the development of the ECCD knowledge base.
Implementation Formats:
regional pilot projects;
professional laboratories and working sessions;
expert visits and advisory support;
analytical and methodological materials.
Target Groups:
craftspeople and workshops;
designers and studios;
educational and cultural institutions;
cities and regions;
professional associations and partner organisations.
Role of ECCD
ECCD acts as an initiator, mediator, and methodological partner, providing professional dialogue, an international context, and an institutional framework, without replacing local actors or assuming managerial functions.
Outcome
Established professional connections, sustainable regional craft and design ecosystems, and their integration into the contemporary creative economy and territorial development.
