Craft Residency Exchange

Craft Residency Exchange is a programme of the Eurasian Council for Craft and Design aimed at facilitating professional exchange between craftspeople from different countries through a system of reciprocal craft residencies.

The programme creates conditions for temporary, practice-based work by craftspeople within partner host residencies, where exchange is centred on real technologies, materials, and methods rather than on demonstrative or short-term visits.

Programme Objectives:

  • development of professional craftsmanship through hands-on international exchange;

  • transmission of technologies, techniques, and production knowledge;

  • formation of transnational professional connections among craftspeople;

  • strengthening the role of craft residencies as centres of knowledge and practice.

Key Areas:

Reciprocal Residencies
Mutual residencies in which craftspeople from different countries work sequentially within host workshops and centres.

Technology & Skills Exchange
Exchange of material-processing techniques, tools, production methods, and local technological solutions.

Practice-Based Learning
A focus on collaborative hands-on work, experimentation, and professional learning through process rather than through lectures.

Local Context Immersion
Engagement with local materials, traditions, and production conditions without folklorisation or touristic framing.

Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
Documentation and structuring of acquired knowledge and practices for further use within ECCD’s educational and research programmes.

Implementation Formats:

  • individual and group residencies;

  • workshops and joint working sessions;

  • pilot collaborative works and prototypes;

  • professional process demonstrations;

  • documentation and reporting on exchange outcomes.

Target Groups:

  • professional masters and craftspeople;

  • craft centres and residencies;

  • educational and cultural institutions;

  • craft researchers and curators;

  • partner cities and regions.

Outcome:

  • deepened professional skills;

  • transfer of technologies between countries and regions;

  • long-term professional connections;

  • development of craft residencies as knowledge infrastructure.

Role of ECCD

ECCD performs the functions of selection, coordination, and methodological support, ensuring a professional level of participants, transparent exchange conditions, and an international institutional framework, without interfering in the creative autonomy of craftspeople.
