Heritage & Research

Heritage & Research is a programme of the Eurasian Council for Craft and Design focused on the research, systematic documentation, and contemporary interpretation of craft heritage within the contexts of design, education, and the creative economy.

The programme approaches craft heritage not as a static cultural asset, but as a living system of knowledge, technologies, and meanings, capable of ongoing development and integration into contemporary practices.


Programme Objectives:

  • research into the craft traditions and technologies of Eurasia;

  • professional documentation of processes, materials, and knowledge;

  • support for responsible contemporary interpretation of craft heritage;

  • development of an evidence base for education, policy, and practice.


Key Areas:

Research & Field Studies;Field research into craft practices, workshops, and local schools, involving researchers, craftspeople, and designers.

Documentation & Archiving;Creation of structured archives, including descriptions of technologies, tools, and materials, as well as visual and audio documentation of processes.

Contemporary Interpretation;Collaboration with designers and craftspeople to adapt traditional techniques to contemporary contexts without loss of meaning or reduction to form.

Ethical Frameworks & IP;Development of ethical principles, intellectual property approaches, and fair use frameworks for traditional knowledge and craft practices.
